Indwelling Catheter

  1. Foley Catheters, are thin sterile tubes passed through the urethrainto the uninary bladder.
  2. Known as indwelling as it remains in the body for a long time. 
  3. It is held in place with a balloon at one end filled with sterile water
  4. Urine is drained into a urine bag through one of the lumens. 
  5. Available in a range of sizes.
  6. Foley Catheters are commonly used :
    1. Obstruction to the urethra
    2. Urinary bladder malfunction due to nervous conditions
    3. Patients suffering from paralysis or mobility issues
    4. Comatose patients
  7. Risks associated with Foley Catheters include: 
    1. Bleeding of the urethra
    2. Urinary tract infections
    3. Premature inflation of the balloon
    4. Breakage of the balloon upon insertion

3 Way: An additional port for irrigation

Tip

Coude Tip: A 45-degree bend at the tip to bypass an enlarged prostate.
