Indwelling Catheter
- Foley Catheters, are thin sterile tubes passed through the urethrainto the uninary bladder.
- Known as indwelling as it remains in the body for a long time.
- It is held in place with a balloon at one end filled with sterile water
- Urine is drained into a urine bag through one of the lumens.
- Available in a range of sizes.
- Foley Catheters are commonly used :
- Obstruction to the urethra
- Urinary bladder malfunction due to nervous conditions
- Patients suffering from paralysis or mobility issues
- Comatose patients
- Risks associated with Foley Catheters include:
- Bleeding of the urethra
- Urinary tract infections
- Premature inflation of the balloon
- Breakage of the balloon upon insertion
